Research Activities

Research in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Laboratory involves studies of molecular structure and molecular dynamics through laser spectroscopy techniques (multi-photon ionization, mass spectrometry, photo-disintegration etc.) and ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy. Other activities include the study of auto-ionized atomic states by laser spectroscopy in an atomic beam and a heat-pipe, the interaction mechanisms of laser with materials and the optical phase conjugation in gases. Theoretical calculations of the interaction between atoms and strong laser fields is another research activity, too.

Studies of the nuclear structure, the mechanisms of nuclear reactions and nucleosynthesis are carried out in the Nuclear Physics Laboratory. Experimental work is performed in the Tandem Laboratory of NSCR "Demokritos" and in various European accelerator facilities. Research is also performed in the field of Applied Nuclear Physics, including nuclear microanalysis and radioecology.

The staff of High Energy Physics Laboratory participates in the CERN CMS experiment, which aims to study the pp interactions at 14 TeV of energy in the center of mass. More specifically, activities include the design and development of silicon detectors and electronic-microelectronic devices to be used in the pre-shower detector and trigger system of CMS.
